“Honto ni Atta Kowai Hanashi (True Tales of Terror),” premieres on Monday, Dec. 5, at 7:35 p.m.

“Honto ni Atta Kowai Hanashi” is an omnibus drama based on real spiritual and supernatural experiences. Known as “HonKowa” in Japan, these realistic reproductions will send a chill down your spine. If you feel something behind you when you’re alone at night, don’t turn around . . . or you might be next! Fully subtitled in English.

“Beppin-san,” premieres on Friday, Dec. 9, at 7:15 p.m.

The 95th drama serial is about Sumire, a girl born in the uptown of Kobe in the early Showa period. During World War II, Sumire gets married and becomes pregnant, but her husband is sent off to war. She gives birth to her first daughter. Right before the end of war, the city of Kobe is attacked. Due to the attack, Sumire loses property. While waiting for her husband to return, she works hard toward making children’s clothes for a living, and later establishes a first-ever children’s goods store in Japan. Fully subtitled in English.

“Futsu ga Ichiban (Simple is Best),” Friday, Dec. 9 and 16, at 7:35 p.m.

With dreams of becoming a Naoki Prize-winning author, Tomeji Kosuge is a widower who ekes out a living as a reporter for a trade newspaper. He lives with his young daughter, Noriko, and his mother, Takie. Based on the true story of writer, Shuhei Fujisawa, “Simple is Best” traces the life of protagonist, Fujisawa, up until his winning of the Naoki Prize in 1973 as seen through the eyes of his beloved daughter, Noriko. A moving and poignant depiction about a man’s abiding love for family and passionate pursuit of a dream. Fully subtitled in English.

“Akamedaka (The Way of the Comic Storyteller),” Sundays, Dec. 18 and 25, at 7:15 p.m.

One of the hottest selling tickets in town is to see the hugely popular “rakugoka,”or comic storyteller, Danshun. Danshun himself was inspired as a little boy to become a rakugoka after seeing the legendary Danshi. He had found his calling. After his resistant parents relented to their son’s pleas, Danshun at age 17 became an apprentice of Danshi, the man dubbed a “wunderkind” and “genius” of the rakugo world. He soon realized however how hard the training was, and embarked upon a rigorous existence in which he had to deliver newspapers to earn a living. Living with hardship and joys, Danshun and his fellow apprentices would eventually rise in the rakugo world. Fully subtitled in English.

Dec. 2: “Okinawa Junen Senso (The Okinawa War of Ten Years),” 1978 drama, 1 hour and 41 minutes.

Directed by Akinori Matsuo. Starring Hiroki Matsukata and Shinichi Chiba.

After World War II, when Okinawa was under control of the United States, the local yakuza prospered. But when Okinawa is returned to Japan, the mainland yakuza tries to take over; the local yakuza tries to compete. Now sides are drawn among the local yakuza guys who used to be best friends since their childhood, and brother fights brother. It results in the biggest yakuza war in Okinawa.

Dec. 3: “Jake Shimabukuro: 4-gen ni Kakeru Jinsei (Jake Shimabukuro: Life on Four Strings),” 2012 drama, 55 minutes.

“Jake Shimabukuro: Life on Four Strings” goes behind the amazing performances to tell the story of the charming musician who has captivated the world with his music. The rise of Hawai‘i’s ‘ukulele virtuoso from bedroom practice sessions to worldwide acclaim is documented. Jake’s passion for the ukulele helped him cope with his parents’ divorce. His musical skill, relentless touring, effortless charisma, and a little help from YouTube are key elements to his transition to the world stage with an instrument revered in Hawai‘i, but formerly relegated to novelty acts worldwide. As Jake tours you will witness his development as a man and musician trying to stay humble while dealing with the unique success of being a ‘ukulele master. Subtitled in Japanese.

Prison escapee Shoichiro is blamed for a murder he did not commit, and is forced to continue his solitary journey for freedom.

“Edokko Hangan to Furisode Kozo (The Edo Official and Apprentice),” 1959 jidaigeki, 1 hour and 27 minutes.

Directed by Tadashi Sawashima. Starring Chiezo Kataoka and Hibari Misora.

Famous magistrate in disguise, Kinshiro confronts female thief Oen.

“Fukuzawa Yukichi (The Passage to Japan),” 1991 history/drama, 2 hours and 3 minutes.

Directed by Shinichiro Sawai. Starring Kyohei Shibata, Toru Nakamura and Yoko Minamino.

A portrayal of the extraordinary life of Yukichi Fukuzawa, founder of Keio University and a great visionary of his time.

They become closer as they share common bonds, but Ji-Gun has a secret that he can’t tell Hae-Ryung.

Hae-Ryung’s twin brother Man-Ho is incompetent and childish. He works at his father’s Chinese restaurant with his wife Mi-Soon. He relies on Mi-Soon at work and at home. One day, Se-Ri, who worked for Sam-Bong’s restaurant in the past and grew up at the same orphanage as Mi-Soon, appears with a baby son. Se-Ri tells Mi-Soon that the child’s father is Man-Ho.

Youngest sibling Hae-Won works as an editor for a fashion magazine. She does not like her new chief editor Kang-Min, because he gained the position due to his father being the CEO of the company.

KIKU-TV 2017 Christmas and New Year’s Specials

“Journey to the Moon,” airs on Monday, Dec. 26, from 9-10:30 p.m.; repeats Tuesday, Dec. 27, from 1-2:30 p.m.

What is destiny? When a series of circumstances bring two people together, is it meant to be? Ryota Shinozaki works for a publishing house, and has traveled to a remote town in the mountainous region of Gifu to meet with an author and pick up his latest work. When he arrives at the train station for his return trip, Ryota notices a blind woman in the waiting area. As he waits for his train, a series of circumstances keeps bringing Ryota and the woman, Rio, together. Finally, Rio confesses she was not at the station to catch a train, but rather, she was there waiting for someone.

“The 67th Annual Red and White Song Contest,” airs Sunday, Jan. 1, from 5-10 p.m.

Köhaku Uta Gassen, more commonly known simply as Köhaku, is an annual music show produced by Japanese broadcaster NHK. The “Red and White Song Contest” is a program that divides the most popular music artists of the year into competing teams of red and white. The red team is composed composed of all female artists (or groups with female vocals), while the white team is all male (or groups with male vocals). A performance on Köhaku is said to be the highlight of a singer’s career because of the show’s large reach and status.

Kohaku airs in Japan on New Year’s Eve, with the announcement of the winning team taking place at midnight. In Hawaii, Kohaku has become a television viewing tradition on New Year’s night, and 2017 marks the 67th year since the program’s inception.

“Temporary Boyfriend,” Mon, Wed, Thu, and Fri, Jan. 2, 4, 5 and 6, at 7 p.m.

Horizon is a mail order company with more than 100 million items in their catalogue. Horizon’s staff has no problem fulfilling their customers’ every desire with the click of a mouse, but when it comes to fulfilling their own happiness, they fall short. Relationships are more difficult to obtain for the young Horizon staff.

“Making It Through 2016 Special,” Monday, Jan. 2, and Sunday, Jan. 8, at 8 p.m.

For 20 years, viewers in Hawaii tuned in to “Making It Through” every Sunday to catch the latest happenings with the Okakura family. Over the 20 year history of the show, we watched characters literally grow up in front of us as Daikichi and his five grown daughters tackled tough subjects such as cancer, death, sibling rivalry, bullying, divorce, and other life experiences.

The “Making It Through” series ended in 2013, but due to high fan demand, the producers have continued to create special episodes chronicling the lives of the series characters following the end of the series. This two-night, four hour special produced in 2016 is the latest, and newest “Making It Through” special.

“Sanada Maru,” – Tuesday, Jan. 3 and Sun, Jan. 8, at 7 p.m.

The 55th NHK Taiga drama, “Sanada Maru,” delves into the life of Sanada Yukimura, Japan’s last great commander in the Warring States period (1467-1567).

Born as the second son to a lord who owned a small piece of land in Shinsu (present day Nagano Prefecture) Sanada Genjiro Nobushige grew up in the shadow of his exceptionally intelligent father and older brother. With courage and perseverance, he faced many hardships and challenges trying to survive very turbulent times, eventually earning him much respect as a samurai warrior.

“Gold Woman,” Tuesday, Jan. 3 at 8 p.m.

Tamaki Yoshizawa is an up-and-coming female executive of Teito Bank tasked with restructuring an underperforming division, which will result in layoffs and the forced retirement of many long-time employees. In the process of carrying out her unpleasant responsibility, Tamaki learns she was set up by her immediate supervisor, Mai Yajima, to carry out the dirty work.

In an environment where women have difficulty enough succeeding in a man’s world, is there any camaraderie amongst women?

“Professor Eiko,” Wednesday, Jan. 4, at 8 p.m.

The body of a professor is discovered at a university lecture hall suspended from the ceiling of the stage, with a series of mysterious numbers written on the curtains nearby.

Professor Eiko, a law professor at the university well versed in criminology, is asked to assist police in the investigation, and he uncovers clues that point to him as a suspect.

Why is he being set up? As he and his assistant work to decipher the code left on the curtains, another professor at the university is murdered. And yet another mysterious code is left at the scene of the crime.

“Meikyu Sousa,” Thursday, Jan. 5, at 8 p.m.

Detective Yoichiro arrives at a crime scene involving the brutal murder of three family members to find a young 5-year-old boy hiding in the closet. The discovery of the young boy takes Detective Yoichiro back to his own tragic childhood when his parents were killed in a fire.

Without any real clues, the murder investigation continues unsolved. That is, until another murder takes place one year later, this time with a mother and son as the victims. And evidence found at the scene links the killer to the murder that took place a year ago.

“Ishizuka Special,” Friday, Jan. 6, at 8 p.m.

Hidehiko Ishizuka, aka The Fat Detective is at it again, exploring Japan and sampling the specialty foods of each area. But traveling with sumo wrestler Oyakata means there is a competition that must be waged before they can eat. The winner gets to eat to his heart’s content, while the loser must be satisfied with just a tiny morsel of food.

“Who Is The Real Celebrity?” Saturday, Jan. 7, at 7 p.m.

Which glass of wine came from a $7 bottle, and which came from a $200 bottle? Which is the real $20,000 watch and which is the knock-off? Watch as celebrities are challenged to distinguish the real from the fake in this fun celebrity challenge.

“Kinako (TV Asahi),” airs on Sunday, Dec. 25, from 8-9:30 p.m.; repeats on Monday, Dec. 26 from noon-1:30 p.m.

Kinako is a documentary about a police dog who repeatedly failed at her police dog trials, and her trainer, who refused to accept that Kinako was a failure.

The trainer’s name is Kyoko Mochizuki . Kyoko was 18 when she admitted to the police dog training academy to begin her lifelong dream of training police dogs. Soon after, Kyoko met Kinako, a Labrador retriever puppy.

Despite Kyoko’s efforts, Kinako repeatedly fails her tests, but Kyoko refuses to give up. With patience, determination, and tenacity, Kyoko continues to work with Kinako, believing that one day, her hard work will be rewarded.

“Business Marriage,” premieres Monday, Jan. 9 at 9 p.m.

A single young woman desperately seeking employment takes on a job of becoming legally married to a straight-laced, unexciting, bachelor businessman.  Can the couple function in a strictly professional relationship like this without the truth becoming known?  Is there any chance of a chemical reaction between a pure company man and a dreamer woman thrown together for mere convenience?

“CSI 2,” premieres Thursday, Jan. 12, at 8 p.m.

Satoshi Itomura portrays an assistant police investigator who belongs to the Metropolitan Police Department’s Scientific Investigation Team. They collect scientific evidence and piece together fragments of information in order to help build a story behind criminal cases. Itomura often does not care about the scientific approach and instead pays a great deal of attention to the things the victims always carried with them or treasured, like the toys from their childhoods. And he focuses on these things because they usually carry the victim’s last message.

“Partners 11,” premieres Saturday, Jan. 14, at 8 p.m.

The eleventh season of this popular detective series. Detective, Ukyo Sugishita, has great insight and cunning skills. His new partner is Toru Kai. Together they solve many mysterious crimes.

“Doctors 3,” premieres Sunday, Jan. 15, at 8 p.m.

Doctors 3 is a continuation of Doctors 1 and 2, which is the popular “Doctors” series about Kousuke Sagara, a highly skilled surgeon who works at a corrupt hospital.

“Shitsuren Chocolatier,” premieres Sunday, Jan. 15 at 9 p.m.

Toyama no Kinsan will bring back many memories for long-time KIKU viewers. The original series was very popular and ran on KIKU for many years. This new remake stars Ken Matsudaira, who will also bring back memories for KIKU viewers. He was the star of Abarenbo Shogun, another very popular series that ran on KIKU for many years.

Kinsan is a magistrate officer who protects the common people and is tough on criminals. Similar to Abarenbo Shogun, he moves through life everyday incognito, until he discovers crime and confronts the offender. Kinsan’s symbol is a tattoo of flowering sakura on his shoulder. When he lowers his kimono and criminals see his tattoo, they confess and the case is closed!

“Jujiro Wada, A Samurai Who Blazed Trails in Alaska: The Story of Mother and Son,” airs on Saturday, Dec. 31, at 6:15 p.m. and repeats on Sunday, Jan. 1, at 12:50 p.m.

A documentary of a performance by a Matsuyama local musical group, “Mikan Ichiza” in Alaska in 2015. Seventeen hundred people came to see the musical and sang along with the cast. A Sister State Ehime Program.

“Chasing the Aurora — The Samurai Musher: The Tale of Jujiro Wada,” Saturday, Dec. 31, at 7:35 p.m. and Sunday, Jan. 1, at 8:40 a.m.

“Dokuganryu Masamune (One-Eyed Dragon Masamune), premieres Sunday, Jan. 1, at 7:15 p.m.

NGN brings back the 25th NHK Taiga drama “Dokuganryu Masamune” (1987) — the most popular ever (by average viewer rating) Taiga drama. Ken Watanabe stars as Masamune Date, a regional strongman of Japan’s Azuchi-Momoyama period through early Edo period. Heir to a long line of powerful daimyo in the Tōhoku region, he goes on to found city of Sendai. An outstanding tactician, he was made all the more iconic for his missing eye, and Date was often called Dokuganryu, or the “one-eyed dragon.” Fully subtitled in English.

“Chushingura,” premieres Sunday, Jan. 1, at 8:50 p.m. The story of a group of samurai who were left leaderless (ronin) after their master, Lord Asano was forced to commit ritual suicide for assaulting a court official, Lord Kira, who earlier insulted him. Kuranosuke Oishi (Ken Matsudaira) leads the ronin in an effort to seek revenge for their beloved Lord’s wrongful death. As the country’s “national legend,” it recounts the most famous case involving the samurai code of honor, bushido. Fully subtitled in English.

“Saiko ni Umai Sushi (Sushi: The Art and Artisan), premieres Sunday, Jan. 1, at 8:25 p.m.

The Edomae (Edo style) sushi was a product of the booming Edo culture when more and more commoners were allowed to hold businesses of their own. Edo style cuisine is known to be saltier and sweeter compared to other cuisines in Japan. Initially, the main ingredients were local to the Tokyo bay, such as tuna, bonito, halibut, sea eel, and shellfish; hence the name Edomae was given to this style of sushi. Although sashimi, or raw fish was consumed in Japan for centuries, it was the first time it was combined into one entity with rice.

Host Hikari Hayakawa (manga artist, movie director, and author) will go to the most exclusive Edomae Sushi restaurants and show you the best sushi and explain each sushi in detail. Fully subtitled in English.

“Grand Tour Setouchi Shimanami Kaido,” airs Sunday, Jan. 1, at 9:40 p.m.

Linking Onomichi City in Hiroshima Prefecture to Imabari City in Ehime Prefecture, the 37-mile long Setouchi Shimanami Kaido contains Japan’s first strait-crossing bicycle course. It connects six islands floating on Seto Inland Sea. Because biking the Setouchi Shimanami Kaido Expressway is almost like riding about the ocean itself, cyclists from around the world call it one of the holy grails of cycling. Tourist spots and local products on the six islands are introduced. Additionally, there are superb viewpoints that are perfect for photos. Fully subtitled in English.

“Okonomiyaki Kiko (In Search of Okonomiyaki),” airs on Sunday, Jan. 1, at 10:10 p.m. and repeats on Monday, Jan. 2, at 10:55 a.m.

“Pet Doctor in the House (Yomiuri TV),” premieres on Saturday, Feb. 18, at 7 p.m.

As a veterinarian, Kentaro Shiba — or Shibaken (as he is known by everyone in town) — saves pets’ lives. But he is also known as a busybody because he worries equally about the pet’s owners.

When he sees someone in trouble, he can’t leave them alone. He’ll do whatever he can to help them out.

To some people, Shibaken is a little bit of a pain. But it’s because he cares as much about the owners of the pets as he does about the pets.

“Ishizuka Special #2,” airs on Sunday, Feb. 19, at 7 p.m.

Hidehiko Ishizuka (aka The Fat Detective) is at it again, exploring areas of Japan and sampling the specialty foods of each area.  This time he travels with sumo master Furiwake to the Miura Peninsula in Kanagawa, where they compete in an eating challenge.  The winner gets to eat to his heart’s content, while the loser must be satisfied with just a tiny morsel of food.

“Naotora: The Lady Warlord,” (NHK) premieres on Tuesday, Feb. 21, at 8 p.m.; repeats on Sunday at 7 p.m.

During the Sengoku period, the Ii family governs the Totomi region. Due to many past wars, there are no more male successors left to become a lord. Naotora Ii, the only daughter of the lord, is next in line. Kinsan is a magistrate officer who protects the common people and is tough on criminals. Similar to Abarenbo Shogun, he moves through life everyday incognito, until he discovers crime and confronts the offender. Kinsan’s symbol is a tattoo of flowering sakura on his shoulder. When he lowers his kimono and criminals see his tattoo, they confess and the case is closed!

“Chokosoku! Sankin Kotai (Samurai Hustle),” premieres Friday, Feb. 24, at 7:35 p.m.

During the reign of the eighth shogun of the Tokugawa shogunate, the Yunagaya Domain in the Tohoku region is small but has a gold mine. Sankin-kotai is a custom that requires the daimyo to visit the shogun in Edo. Masaatsu Naito of Yunagaya Domain receives an order to perform Sankin-kotai within five days; however, the time needed to visit Edo is eight days. He also learns he received the order because a high-ranking government official wants the gold mine. Masaatsu begins an unexpected operation to complete Sankin-kotai in the required time. Sam-Bong opens Chinese restaurant Gahwamansasung. He is cheap and an authoritarian to his family. He has a wife and three children: twins Hae-Ryung and Man-Ho and younger sibling Hae-Won.

Hae-Ryung appears to have a perfect life with her husband Hyun-Ki, but her life is far from perfect. Her only son died in a car accident five years ago. Her husband acts indifferent towards her and her mother-in-law is cruel towards her in private. At that time, Hae-Ryung meets Ji-Gun. They become closer as they share common bonds, but Ji-Gun has a secret that he can’t tell Hae-Ryung.

Hae-Ryung’s twin brother Man-Ho is incompetent and childish. He works at his father’s Chinese restaurant with his wife Mi-Soon. He relies on Mi-Soon at work and at home. One day, Se-Ri, who worked for Sam-Bong’s restaurant in the past and grew up at the same orphanage as Mi-Soon, appears with a baby son. Se-Ri tells Mi-Soon that the child’s father is Man-Ho.

Youngest sibling Hae-Won works as an editor for a fashion magazine. She does not like her new chief editor Kang-Min, because he gained the position due to his father being the CEO of the company.
